Q. Can I go back and post-process (e.g., Color Measurement) an absolute irradiance spectrum that I have saved previously?

A. Certainly, however we do not recommend this as it is considerably more tedious then just doing the color measurement during the initial acquisition.

1. First load your .ProcSpec file from your absolute irradiance measurement using File?Load Processed Spectrum…

2. Right click on the picture of the spectrum under Data Sources and select save spectrum

3. Click on Sample spectrum in the chart and save this file as sample.txt in tab delimited format.

4. Next load the sample file you just saved using File?Load Spectra Collection…

5. A picture of for the sample.txt file should appear under Data Sources

6. Start a new absolute irradiance measurement by clicking File?New?Absolute Irradiance Measurement

7. Select New spectral acquisition and click Next

8. Select the sample.txt file in the next window and click Next

9. Select Get Calibration from File and click Next. It is critical that you use the calibration file that was used for the original Absolute Irradiance Measurement!

10. Browse to the location of the file, select it, and click Next.

11. Enter the collection area for the original measurement and click Next

12. This is also critically important for the Absolute Irradiance, Photometry, and Energy Power Photons outputs. You must input the integration time of the original absolute irradiance measurement. The colorimetric values will be unaffected (with the exception of XYZ).

13. Click on Browse… in the window for saving a dark spectrum.

14. Select the .ProcSpec file from the original absolute irradiance measurement and click Open

15. Select the Dark spectrum and click Load

16. Clicking Finish brings up a graph displaying the absolute irradiance processing of the sample.txt file.

17. You can now proceed to the Color Measurement, Photometry, or Energy/Power/Photons processing as well.

Q.
How do I remove incorrect or outdated drivers for my Ocean Optics spectrometer in Windows?

A.
All Ocean Optics spectrometers require device drivers to be loaded before the device is attached to your computer via the USB port.

Several Ocean Optics applications - including OOIBase32, SpectraSuite, OmniDriver and USB Programmer install the necessary driver files on your Windows computer. If a spectrometer is attached prior to the installation of these device driver files, Windows may install an invalid driver.

To correct this, just follow these steps:

Open the Device Manager in Windows.
- Right click the My Computer icon
- Select Properties to open the System Properties window
- Click on the Hardware tab

Click the Device Manager button.

Look for the incorrectly installed spectrometer driver. It will likely have an exclamation point on a yellow background or a red X icon beside it.

Right click the device and select Uninstall.

You may see a warning that you are about to remove this device. Click the OK button.

Disconnect the spectrometer from the USB port on your computer.

Install the software provided with your spectrometer. This will install the needed driver files to their proper locations.

Now, attach the spectrometer to a USB port on your computer. This will invoke the Windows Found New Hardware Wizard. The dialog box will ask you if Windows may connect to Windows Update to search for the software. Select Not This Time and click Next.

The next dialog box will ask what you want the Wizard to do. Allow the default selection, Install the Software Automatically, to be selected and click Next.

The Wizard will then automatically search for the software and install it.

Go back to the Device Manager as we did in the beginning and expand the node for Ocean Optics Devices. You should see your spectrometer listed below and the exclamation point or X that was visible before is now gone.

This means you’ve successfully installed the proper driver files and your spectrometer is ready to use.

The visible lamp for my CHEMUSB4-UV-VIS isn’t working. What should I do?

A.
First, you’ll want to determine the source of the trouble by verifying the software settings in SpectraSuite are correct. To do this, follow these steps:

Disconnect the spectrometer from the USB port of your computer

Connect the power supply to the USB-ISS-UV lamp module

Connect the spectrometer USB cable to the computer

Open SpectraSuite software

Check the Strobe/Lamp Enable selection

When the Features box is opened, select the UV/VIS tab

Verify that check boxes are selected for both lamps

You can also modify the UV and Visible lamp intensity in this window

If these steps fail to initiate the lamp signals, your spectrometer may require a firmware update. Follow the instructions here to reinstall firmware:

1. Download and install the USB EEPROM Programmer utility from our website:

2. http://www.oceanoptics.com/technical/softwaredownloads.asp

This utility installs the latest version of the microcode for all Ocean Optics devices

3. Connect the USB device to the PC

4. Run the USB programmer by selecting Start | Programs | Ocean Optics | USB Programmer | USB Programmer.

5. In the left pane of the interface, the USB Programmer displays all Ocean Optics USB devices that are currently connected.

6. Click on a device to select it. Once you select a device, detailed information for that device is displayed in the right pane of the interface. The current firmware version of the selected device is displayed in the first entry on the right pane.

7. Press the Program button and select the appropriate EEPROM update file (.IIC file) for your Ocean Optics USB device. Programming begins immediately, and the estimated time for completion of the reprogramming process displays in the bottom status bar.

IMPORTANT: Do not interrupt the programming process for any reason! If the programming process is interrupted, permanent corruption can occur in the EEPROM on the USB device. Consult the Recovering a Corrupted EEPROM section of this document for a procedure that may rectify this condition.

I have my absolute irradiance spectrum in SpectraSuite and, now I want to look at photometric quantities. What do I need to do?

A.
If you are interested in photometric values of a light emitting entity from within absolute
irradiance mode in SpectraSuite you just have to click on the candle icon in the upper right hand corner of the spectrum graph, as shown in Figure 1.
Clicking on the candle icon causes the Configure Photometry dialog box to appear, as shown in
Figure 2. In order to proceed to the automatically calculated photometric quantities in
SpectraSuite, you must first enter your observer type and steradians value, , for your
experiment. The observer type is selected as either the 2-degree or 10-degree standard
observers, as defined by the CIE, from the drop down menu (the user should already know for
which observer they would like the values computed).

Q.
What is the Index of Refraction of the optical fibers, including the core and cladding?

A.
Since the numerical aperture (NA) is given in the catalog, as 0.22±0.02, then applying the following equation at a certain wavelength.
NA=(nf2-nc2)1/2
The index of refraction of the cladding (nc) can be found, if the index of refraction of the core (nf) is given at the same wavelength that is being worked with.

Example:

NA=(nf2-nc2)1/2

Given:
NA = 0.22
nf = 1.46 @ 630nm

0.22 = ((1.46)2-nc2)1/2

Solving for nc:
nc = 1.44 @ 630nm

Likewise:
NA = 0.22
nf = 1.50 @ 300nm

0.22 = ((1.50)2-nc2)1/2

Solving for nc:
nc = 1.48 @ 300nm

Q.
Can I use the wizards in SpectraSuite to do measurements with my multi-channel Jaz with attached light source?

A.
Due to the light being controlled by all six channels when you enable the light through the SpectraSuite wizard, you will not be able to get all six channels set up with the standard method of enabling the light in SpectraSuite. There is a method of setting the six channels in SpectraSuite, but you must control the light source on the Jaz unit itself, and not utilize the Strobe/Lamp Enable option in the wizard or in SpectraSuite.

Turn on the lamp on the Jaz Unit. To do this, turn the power on the Jaz, then select the X button to access the Jaz Menu.

Select the Check button from the options on the right side of the jaz after you have highlighted Light Source.

You will then see the options for the installed light sources in your particular Jaz Unit.

Select the selection symbol that is indicated beside the light source you want to work with.

This takes you to the Menu that is specific to your installed light source. You will see that this gives you the option to turn the light source on, control the intensity and enable/disable the shutter.

Select the option to turn the light source on. In the situation pictured below, you will select the triangle selection option.

Turn the light source on, then go to the SpectraSuite software to start the wizard of your choice (absorbance, transmission, etc).

Select File | New | (measurement wizard of your choice)
(Screen shots are of Absorbance measurements)

Select the first channel (or any other channel that you may be wishing to start with) from your Jaz Unit for the first spectral source, then click NEXT.

With your reference in place, click Set Automatically to allow the software to adjust your integration time so that the amount of light hitting the detector is approximately 90% of the saturation value.

Click the store reference icon and click Next. Do not attempt to control the lamp using the Strobe/Lamp Enable activation box.

On the Jaz Unit, select the Shutter option so that you can control the light source with the shutter. Your screen should look like the following picture. If you do not have these options showing on your screen, return to previous screens using the X button. This will return you to the main light source screen, you can again select the light source, and you will see the following options.

Select the option for Shutter (# symbol)

Close the shutter by selecting the # symbol (closed). Leave the Jaz unit on this screen, as you will be using this for the additional channels.

Click the Store Dark icon and click Finish (some wizards have additional steps before the wizard is complete, but these steps do not have any impact on the control of the light source).

You will now have a graph that is in the mode based on the wizard you are using. Remember that at this point, your light source shutter is still closed. You can open the shutter to view the graph.

To set up the next channel, you will follow the steps starting with step number 6 selecting the next channel you wish to set up for your particular experiment.

Operating the light source on the Jaz Unit directly avoids confusion that the software encounters by each channel trying to shutter the light individually.
